What is a gearbox?
If it is necessary to translate the torque and rotation speed of the electric motor to meet the requirements of the drive system by a specific application, a gearbox is needed. For this reason, the gear unit is the main component of gear motors.
How does transfer work?
Depending on the structure, size or number of steps, the gear turns the speed of the motor into more or less revolutions. The resulting speed ratio between input speed and output speed is the most important parameter of the gearbox. The efficiency of a gear and the loads it can carry depends on the maximum torque measured in newton meters [Nm].
What are the types of gears?
Gears differ in how they carry the transmitted energy flow. Therefore, there are three basic types of construction: flat gears, bevel gears and planetary gears.
In the case of flat and planetary gears,
The input and output axes are arranged in the same direction (on the same plane). Therefore, power transmission is carried out in a straight line. Flat gears are available as cylindrical gears or flat gears.
Planetary gears are a special shape.
In this case, the power transmission is coaxial. The speed and torque of the driving axis – the central gear – is transferred and converted to the external gear (output side) through three or more planetary gears. The special feature is that the driving axis and the output axis move in the same direction. In combination with a servo motor, planetary servo motors offer high dynamics and precision.
In the case of bevel gears,
The driving axis and the output shaft are in a vertical position relative to each other, which leads to the fact that the transmitted energy flow is directed in a rectangular shape. Bevel gears are available in three designs. This includes helical and worm gear units and SPIROPLAN® helical gears, available exclusively from SEW-EURODRIVE.
